Play battles defensively: Playing offensively is too dangerous on very hard and overall it is just better to adjust your army as the AI advances on you. Something that can happen if you destroy a nation and new nations emerge from their overseas regions it can lead to unfixable crashes, so you should try to take those regions or put yourself in position to quickly get them.
